Synonym for preovulatory follicle. A large, mature tertiary follicle that will respond to an adequate LH surge or injection of human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) by undergoing ovulation, releasing its egg. Produces estradiol and, with exposure to LH or hCG, progesterone.
